Our Plumbing Repair Services

No job is too big or too small. At Capitol Contractors, our Santa Fe plumbers approach every call by looking past the symptom to find the underlying cause. We carry an extensive inventory of replacement parts so we can complete most repairs in a single visit, without the delays that come from ordering components after the fact.

Problems our Santa Fe plumbing repairs solve:

Plumbing Conditions Unique to Santa Fe County

Capitol Contractors has been navigating Santa Fe’s specific plumbing conditions since 1968. That experience matters, because this region presents challenges that don’t show up in most service manuals. We work on both historic adobe-style homes and newer developments across the county, and we know what’s actually driving a problem rather than just what it looks like on the surface.

Hard Water & Mineral Buildup

Santa Fe’s water supply carries dissolved calcium and magnesium at hard to very hard levels. That mineral load builds up as scale inside pipes, water heater tanks, and drain lines, reducing flow and shortening appliance lifespan over time.

Caliche Soil & Monsoon Drainage

Just below the surface, caliche (a hardened calcium carbonate layer common across northern New Mexico) blocks downward drainage. During monsoon season, rainfall accumulates above it, building hydrostatic pressure against slab foundations and stressing buried sewer line joints in ways that aren’t obvious until a joint fails.

High-Elevation Seal Degradation

At roughly 7,000 feet in an arid climate, rubber gaskets, wax rings, and flexible pipe connectors dry out and degrade faster than they would at lower elevations. When winter arrives, sharp overnight temperature drops create freeze-thaw stress on pipes in exterior walls and uninsulated spaces throughout the county.

Aging Pipe Infrastructure

Older Santa Fe homes, including historic adobe structures, often have aging galvanized pipe infrastructure that needs proactive attention. Waiting for a visible failure in these systems typically means a more involved repair. Our team knows these conditions well and is ready to address them directly.

Signs You Need a Plumbing Professional

Call us if you notice any of the following:

  • Low Water Pressure: A sudden drop in pressure at your sinks, showers, or fixtures can signal a pipe problem or a hidden leak worth investigating.
  • Slow Drains: Slow-draining sinks, tubs, or showers usually mean a developing clog that can worsen without treatment.
  • Unusual Pipe Noises: Banging, gurgling, or whistling from your pipes can point to air in the lines, loose fittings, or sediment buildup.
  • Water Stains: Discoloration on walls, ceilings, or floors often indicates a hidden leak behind the surface.
  • Frequent Clogs: Recurring clogs in the same drain suggest a deeper problem in the system, not just surface debris.
  • High Water Bills: An unexplained increase in your water bill can indicate a hidden leak or a running toilet.
  • Foul Odors: Bad smells from drains or plumbing fixtures can signal sewer line damage or a broken pipe.
  • Discolored Water: Rusty or off-color water may point to corroded pipes that need repair or replacement.
  • Water Backups: Water backing up into sinks, tubs, or toilets is a serious sign of a blockage or sewer line issue that needs immediate attention.
  • Visible Leaks: Any water leaking from pipes, faucets, or fixtures should be addressed right away before the damage spreads.

If you’re seeing any of these signs, don’t wait. Catching a plumbing problem early is often faster and less expensive than dealing with it after it escalates.

Reliable 24/7 Emergency Plumbing Repairs

Some plumbing problems can’t wait until morning. If you’re dealing with a burst pipe, a sewage backup, a gas leak, or any situation that threatens the safety of your home or family, call us immediately. Our emergency line is staffed around the clock, and we can dispatch a technician to you as quickly as possible. There are no overtime rates. The same fair rate applies at 2 a.m. on a holiday weekend as it does during regular business hours. When you’re not sure whether something qualifies as an emergency, call anyway. We’d rather help you assess a situation that turns out to be minor than have you wait on something serious.

Professional Faucet Leak Repair

A leaking faucet wastes more water than most people realize. According to the EPA, a faucet dripping at just one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons per year. Our technicians assess the overall condition of the faucet, identify the failed component, and address it efficiently. If it’s a worn washer or O-ring, we can handle it on the spot. If replacement is the more cost-effective path, we can help you choose a faucet that fits your needs and budget.

Toilet Repair & Replacement

A running toilet, a clog that won’t budge, or water pooling around the base are all signs it’s time to call a professional. Our toilet repair team handles the full range of toilet problems, and if replacement makes more sense than repair, we can help with that too. We offer water-saving options across a range of styles and budgets, so you won’t have to compromise on performance or aesthetics.

Santa Fe Plumbing Repair FAQ

How Does Hard Water Affect My Plumbing?

Santa Fe County’s water is hard to very hard, meaning it carries high concentrations of calcium and magnesium. Over time, those minerals accumulate as scale inside pipes and appliances, reducing water flow and putting extra strain on water heaters. That added strain can shorten appliance lifespan and increase energy consumption. Regular maintenance and a water-softening system can slow this buildup and help keep your plumbing running efficiently for longer.

What Are the Benefits of Regular Plumbing Maintenance?

Routine maintenance lets a plumber catch small problems before they become expensive ones. A typical inspection covers leak checks, drain cleaning, and water heater condition. These tasks take relatively little time but can help prevent the kind of failures that cause real disruption. Well-maintained systems also tend to use water more efficiently, which can add up on your utility bills over time.

Why Is My Water Bill Suddenly Increasing?

A spike in your water bill usually points to a hidden leak or a running toilet. Start by checking visible pipes for drips and testing your toilets for silent leaks. If you have outdoor irrigation, check that too. If nothing obvious turns up, a plumber can diagnose what’s happening and recommend the right fix before the waste compounds further.

    "Excellent work"
Our heat went out late Saturday night - We called Capitol Plumbing and the crew, two men, Xavier and Alex, were here early Sunday morning. The furnace was removed and by 6:00 pm the new furnace was up and working - The heat was on and the house warmed up quite fast. Xavier and Alex were friendly and worked very efficiently replacing the old furnace. They were very helpful and informative and explained everything about the new furnace and answered all our questions. When crew had completed the job, they waited until the temperature was up to the degrees necessary for furnace to work. Thank you for a job well-done and I would recommend Capitol Plumbing and Heating in Santa Fe to anyone who needs plumbing work done. Thank you, we are once again warm and cozy.

"Emergency service was also quick and efficient and very Professional."
Xavior, arrived at a much needed time to fix our leak. He was fast to detect the leak and addressed the situation in a professional manner. It was late and after hours but he was not hurried and explained what happened, what he did and what has yet to be done. If you are not using them or need good service we recommend them, they responded among the many we tried to reach, so they will have our business for some time to come. Thank you for relieving our problem and minds.

    "Service with humor!"
After being stood up by another plumber we called Paul's Plumbing & Heating, Inc. They contacted Xavier and Beto from Capitol Plumbing and Heating who fixed our outdoor faucet, which would not turn off. Xavier explained everything and showed us the process. He was professional, witty, and patient with my questions. I highly recommend them and am also impressed Paul's Plumbing contacted them since they didn't have any available crews. Both companies have customers' best interests in mind.

"Very happy with Xavior and Capitol"
My kitchen sink x2 was hopelessly plugged up. Filthy water that had backed up was just sitting there. That is so unhealthy. I called Capitol this morning and they said they'd send out a serviceman in a couple of hours, which they did. Xavior came by and did a great job. He was polite, knowledgeable, smart and neat....no mess left behind for me! And best of all, the drains are running perfectly! Capitol has also installed my furnace and water tank, all within the last year or so (3/2021). And I am VERY pleased with that result as well....thanks to Adrian for that....great job.

    "$1200.00"
Both Tomas and Xavier Martinez were prompt and courteous. They went beyond what was a leaking hot water valve. After replacing the valve and water line hose, they checked the boiler system and found it was not properly operating and took care of it for us. We were thankful for their thoroughness and quick service.
    - Dave Wilkison
    "Excellent friendly knowledgeable service."
Had them install a complete new system for heating water and and radiant heat system. Went to a tankless hot water system. They worked very efficiently and wasted no time installing the system. Workers were friendly and explained everything about the equipment and answered my questions since I was not familiar with the tankless hot water system and the radiant heat used in homes. They hauled away the old tank and boiler and a soft water system that was out dated. It took about two days but the water was only off for part of the first day and we had hot water that night for showering. Over all a very positive experience and I would highly recommend Capitol Plumbing & Heating of Santa Fe for all your plumbing needs.
